How to Delete or Clear Claude's Memory (2026)

Aditya Kumar JhaAditya Kumar JhaLinkedInAmazon·August 5, 2026·8 min read

Turn off, edit, or fully wipe what Claude remembers about you - the exact 2026 steps, plus why deleting a chat doesn't clear memory.

Claude remembers you now. Since its memory feature rolled out across plans, Claude quietly builds a running profile from your conversations — your job, your projects, your writing style, your preferences — and carries it from one chat to the next. That is genuinely useful right up until the moment it isn't: it remembers something outdated, something private, or something you only said once and never wanted kept. If you have ever thought 'how do I make Claude forget that,' this is the guide. Every step below is the current 2026 flow, straight from Anthropic's own settings.

The most important thing to understand first is that 'delete a chat' and 'clear memory' are two different actions — and confusing them is why people think they wiped something when they didn't. We'll cover turning memory off, editing individual memories, wiping everything, using private chats that are never remembered, and how all of this ties into whether Anthropic trains on your conversations.

Insight

Quick summary: Claude's memory lives at Settings > Memory. Toggle off 'Generate memory from chats' to stop new memories (this does NOT delete existing ones). Use 'Reset memory' to permanently wipe everything, including project memories - it cannot be undone. Delete an individual memory from the same screen. For chats you don't want remembered at all, start an Incognito chat (the ghost icon). Key gotcha: deleting a conversation does not remove what Claude already saved to memory - those are stored separately. Memory is available on Free, Pro and Max; Team and Enterprise have a separate rollout.

First, What 'Memory' Actually Is

People use 'memory' to mean four different things in Claude, and knowing which one you want saves a lot of frustration. First is the persistent Memory feature: individual memory entries, organized into categories, that Claude reads and writes in real time as you chat and reuses across separate conversations. Second is project memory: each Project keeps its own separate memory space and summary, so context inside a Project stays there. Third is chat history: your past conversations, which Claude can search — separate from memory. Fourth is Incognito chats: a temporary mode that isn't saved to memory or pulled into search at all. When you want Claude to 'forget,' you almost always mean the first one — the persistent memory — so that's where most of these steps point.

Turn Memory Off (Without Deleting What's There)

If you just want Claude to stop building a profile from here on, go to Settings > Memory and switch off 'Generate memory from chats.' There's also a Pause option, which keeps your existing memories but stops Claude from creating new ones or referencing them. Important nuance most people miss: turning memory off does not erase what's already stored. It only stops new memories forming. If your goal is a genuinely clean slate, you have to do both — turn generation off and reset (next section).

Delete a Specific Memory or Wipe Everything

To remove one thing Claude got wrong or shouldn't keep: open Settings > Memory, and either use the text box to tell Claude what to change or remove, or select Delete on the specific entry. You can also just say it inside a conversation — 'forget that I work at X' — and Claude will update the memory directly. To wipe the lot, use Reset memory in Settings > Memory, then confirm. Reset permanently deletes all memories, including your project memories, and it cannot be undone; re-enabling memory afterward starts from scratch. Treat Reset as the nuclear option — it's thorough precisely because it doesn't leave anything behind.

The Trap: Deleting a Chat Doesn't Clear Memory

This is the single most common mistake. Deleting a conversation removes it from your history — it disappears from your view right away and is purged from Anthropic's back end within about 30 days — but the memory entries Claude formed from that chat are stored separately and stay put. Because memory was written in real time while you talked, wiping the source conversation later doesn't pull the learned facts back out. So if Claude keeps 'knowing' something you thought you erased, you deleted the chat but not the memory. Fix it by editing or deleting that memory entry, or by using Reset memory. To delete a conversation itself: on the web, hover it in the sidebar, click the three-dot menu, choose Delete, and confirm; on mobile, touch-and-hold (iOS) or use the three-dot menu (Android). To bulk-delete (on the web), use the Select mode in your chats list, check the ones you want, and delete.

The Cleanest Trick: Incognito Chats

If there's something you simply never want remembered — a sensitive question, a one-off you don't want shaping your profile — don't rely on deleting it afterward. Start the chat in Incognito mode instead: begin a new chat outside any Project and click the ghost icon in the upper right. Incognito chats aren't saved to memory and aren't used in conversation search, so nothing from them ever lands in your profile. It's the difference between cleaning up after yourself and never leaving a trace in the first place — the second is always safer.

Memory and Whether Anthropic Trains on Your Chats

Memory naturally raises a privacy question, so here's where things stand in 2026. Anthropic now gives Free, Pro and Max users a choice about whether their chats and coding sessions can be used to train Claude's models. If you allow it, that data can be retained for up to five years; if you decline, retention drops to 30 days. By default this setting is on, so unless you actively turned it off, your new chats can be used to train Claude — it's worth opening Settings > Privacy and switching off ‘Help improve Claude’ if you'd rather they weren't. This training choice is separate from memory: your memory profile follows your normal data-retention settings and is included in data exports, while Incognito chats sit outside both. Note this training choice does not apply to Team, Enterprise, Claude for Work, Education, Government, or the API.

  • Memory lives at Settings > Memory - that's the control center for everything below.
  • Turning memory off stops new memories but does NOT delete existing ones.
  • 'Reset memory' is the full, permanent wipe - it also clears project memories and can't be undone.
  • Deleting a chat does not clear what Claude saved to memory; they're stored separately.
  • Incognito chats (ghost icon) are never saved to memory - use them for anything sensitive.
  • Check Settings > Privacy to control whether your chats train Claude (off unless you opt in).
Frequently Asked Questions
01How do I completely wipe Claude's memory?

Go to Settings > Memory and choose Reset memory, then confirm. This permanently deletes all memories, including project memories, and cannot be undone. For a true clean slate, also turn off 'Generate memory from chats' so Claude doesn't immediately start rebuilding a profile.

02If I delete a conversation, does Claude forget what it learned?

No. Deleting a chat removes it from your history (and it's purged on the back end within about 30 days), but memory entries are stored separately and remain. To remove what Claude learned, edit or delete the specific memory in Settings > Memory, or use Reset memory.

03Can I stop Claude from remembering just one conversation?

Yes - start it as an Incognito chat by clicking the ghost icon (in a new chat outside any Project). Incognito chats are never saved to memory or used in search, so nothing from them enters your profile.

04Does Claude's free plan have memory?

Yes. As of 2026 the memory feature is available on Free, Pro and Max on web, desktop and mobile. Team and Enterprise plans have a separate rollout. Incognito mode is available on all plans.

05Does turning memory off delete my existing memories?

No. The toggle only stops Claude from creating and using new memories. Your existing memories stay until you delete them individually or use Reset memory. To fully clear things, do both: turn generation off and reset.

Memory is one of those features that's great when it works for you and unsettling when it works against you — the fix is simply knowing where the controls are. Now you do: pause it, prune it, wipe it, or dodge it entirely with Incognito. If you'd rather compare how different assistants handle memory and privacy before trusting any one of them with your life story, LumiChats lets you use several leading models under one login at a pay-per-day price, so you can see whose approach to remembering — and forgetting — actually suits you.
