Claude's $200 Plan Dropped Its 5-Hour Limit. Is 'Ultra' Really 20x?

Aditya Kumar JhaAditya Kumar JhaLinkedInAmazon·October 31, 2026·7 min read

Anthropic renamed Max 20x to Ultra at $200 and removed the 5-hour cap for verified users. The weekly cap is 10x Pro. What the new tiers really mean.

Anthropic quietly reshuffled the names on its top two Claude consumer plans around October 30, 2026. What used to be Max 5x is now simply Max. What used to be Max 20x is now Ultra. Prices did not change, but one real limit did: verified Ultra accounts no longer have a five-hour usage window. The weekly cap stays.

The rename also exposes a question many subscribers had asked: what did '20x' actually measure? Here is what Anthropic's own help page says, what the numbers work out to, and what remains unclear.

Insight

Quick summary: As of October 30, 2026, Max 20x is renamed Ultra ($200/month) and Max 5x is renamed Max ($100/month). Ultra gives 10 times the Pro plan's usage every week and, for verified accounts, no five-hour limit; weekly limits are unchanged. Existing subscribers move over automatically at the same price.

The new lineup

According to Anthropic's Help Center, Ultra costs $200 a month on the web, is currently monthly-only, and offers '10 times the Pro plan's usage every week'. Verified accounts have no five-hour limit, only the weekly cap. Existing Max 20x subscribers move to Ultra automatically at the same price. (Source: Claude Help Center)

FourWeekMBA, citing Anthropic's pricing page and the company's X post, lists Pro at $20 a month ($17 a month billed annually), Max at $100 with 5x Pro usage every five hours and every week, and Ultra at $200 with 10x Pro usage every week and no five-hour limit. It quotes Anthropic's post as saying that weekly limits remain unchanged. (Source: FourWeekMBA)

PlanMonthly priceUsage vs ProFive-hour limit
Pro$20 ($17 billed annually)1xYes
Max (formerly Max 5x)$1005x every 5 hours and every weekYes
Ultra (formerly Max 20x)$20010x every weekNo, for verified accounts

The '20x' puzzle

The old name promised 20 times Pro. The new help page promises 10 times Pro per week. FourWeekMBA says it is unclear whether '20x' referred to weekly or five-hour usage, and notes that Anthropic's Help Center implies the old weekly allowance was also 10x Pro. It adds that two posters on X offered conflicting readings. We are therefore not going to claim a definitive answer: third-party posters read the multiple as applying to the five-hour window, but Anthropic has not spelled this out.

FourWeekMBA also cites earlier SemiAnalysis measurements of A/B-tested Max 20x accounts, in which one account got a 19% larger five-hour window and a 20% smaller weekly budget. Those are SemiAnalysis's measurements, not Anthropic's, and apply to accounts in a test, so do not generalize them.

Dollar arithmetic

FourWeekMBA's own arithmetic shows that on the weekly figure each plan costs the same per unit: $20 for 1x, $100 for 5x and $200 for 10x all work out to $20 per Pro-week of usage. At list price, Ultra comes to $2,400 per year. So the upgrade from Max to Ultra buys more headroom and the removal of the short window, not a discount per unit of usage.

What 'verified' means

Anthropic says it verifies Ultra accounts automatically using account and payment history, so you do not need to act. Newer accounts keep a temporary five-hour limit until verified. To check, go to Settings > Usage: if you do not see a 'Current session' bar, you are verified. Adding a phone number at checkout does not remove the limit. Anthropic also reserves the right to impose other caps, such as weekly or monthly limits or restrictions on specific models, and does not guarantee uninterrupted service. • Who benefits: heavy users who regularly hit the five-hour window mid-task, such as long coding sessions.
  • Who does not: people who hit the weekly cap, which is unchanged.
  • Who needs to do nothing: existing Max 20x subscribers, who move over automatically at the same price.

If you are upgrading from an annual Pro plan, the help page says any unused balance above the Ultra price becomes an account credit, but the billing address must match your previous subscription. Google Play subscribers pay the full price upfront, with unused balance converted into extra days.

Pro Tip

Before paying $200, open Settings > Usage and look at how often you actually hit the five-hour window versus the weekly cap. If you rarely hit the short window, Ultra's headline benefit may not matter to you.

Frequently Asked Questions
01What did Anthropic rename?

Max 20x became Ultra ($200 a month) and Max 5x became Max ($100 a month). Prices stayed the same.

02Does Ultra have no limits at all?

No. Verified accounts have no five-hour limit, but the weekly cap of 10 times Pro usage still applies, along with a separate weekly limit for Fable, and Anthropic may impose other caps.

03Do I need to do anything if I was on Max 20x?

No. Existing subscribers move to Ultra automatically at the same price.

04How do I know if my account is verified?

Open Settings > Usage. If there is no 'Current session' bar, your account is verified, per Anthropic's Help Center.

05Was Max 20x really 20 times Pro?

Unclear. The new help page says 10 times Pro weekly, and coverage says the meaning of 20x was never clearly stated. Anthropic has not published a reconciliation.
